Common questions
Things people ask before the first call.
If yours isn't here, call (337) 362-3380 or email help@stakestherapy.com. No question is too small to ask first.
Is Stakes Therapy right for me?
The honest answer is that a first conversation tells you more than a website can. Therapy here is evidence-based, client-centered, and solution-focused — you set the goals, and the approach is chosen to fit them.
Call or email and describe what's going on. If this practice is a good fit, we'll schedule a first session. If it isn't, we'll say so.
Who does Stakes Therapy see?
- Adolescents, ages 12–17
- Adults, 18 and up
- Veterans and active military
What kinds of therapy do you use?
Psychotherapy covers a range of approaches — cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, EMDR, and family or group work among them. Each one suits different needs.
Rather than running everyone through the same program, the approach is matched to your circumstances and adjusted as things change.
What is a psychological evaluation?
It's a structured assessment of mental health, thinking, and emotional wellbeing, carried out by a licensed professional using established assessment tools.
The point is clarity: understanding what's happening, identifying any conditions present, and using that to shape treatment and support going forward.
What are the signs of a mental health crisis?
Signs vary, but often include:
- Feeling like you're losing control
- Intense stress after an event or major change
- Persistent fear, anxiety, worry, or depression
- Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to act
- Significant weight gain or loss
- A decline in performance at work or school
- Pronounced changes in mood
- Pulling away from routines and relationships
- Expressing no sense of purpose
- Acting impulsively
How can I help someone in a crisis?
- Reassure them that you care about them
- Keep your voice calm and even, and move slowly
- Listen actively — eye contact, nodding, kind body language
- Reflect back what you hear so they know you understand
- Ask open-ended questions without judgment
- Hold off on advice
Then help them reach support. The 988 line below is available to you as well, not only to the person in crisis.
What are your hours, and where are you located?
